Below read about the history of our company and the mission we have set to govern our service to you. Again, we look forward to being a part of Polk County’s growth and a member of this great community. History of Metromont Materials Established by Captain James Roy Pennell, who founded the South Carolina State Highway Department, the company began as Pennell and Harley Construction Engineers, contracting heavy construction work throughout the Southeast. Over a period of time, four other family corporations - Spartanburg Concrete Company (est. 1935), Greenville Concrete Company (est. 1936), Superior Concrete Company in Anderson, South Carolina (est. 1951), and Pennell Land Company (est. 1955) - merged to become Metromont Materials Corporation in 1973. Metromont Materials added production facilities in Asheville, Hendersonville, Marion, Statesville, and North Wilkesboro, North Carolina; Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. Smaller operations were added throughout the Carolinas as well. Diversification began with the building of a reinforced concrete pipe plant in 1957, a prestressed concrete and architectural products facility in 1959, an interlocking concrete pavers plant in 1989, and in 1992, a ground-face block plant to complement architectural units. Captain Pennell served as president and chief executive officer of the companies until 1963 when his son, Richard H. Pennell, assumed those positions. Representing the third generation, Richard H. Pennell, Jr. served as manager of prestress operations in Atlanta, Georgia, Greenville, South Carolina, and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1983, RMC Group, p.l.c. of London, England, purchased the 75 percent of outstanding stock not owned by the two Richard Pennells. RMC Group purchased the remaining portion of Metromont Materials from the Pennells in 1998. Warren E. Cochran was named president at that time and served as president until his retirement on December 31, 2000. After Mr. Cochran's retiring, Chris West was appointed president and continues to serve in that capacity. Metromont Materials remains a substantially autonomous South Carolina Limited Liability Corporation operated by local management. Metromont Materials presently operates 30 ready mix plants, 12 block plants, two precast plants, one reinforced concrete pipe plant, one concrete paver plant, and 18 building materials operations. These facilities are situated in North Carolina and South Carolina. The company employs over 1000 people and markets its products throughout the Southeastern United States Mission Statement "To supply quality products, services, and building systems to our customers in the construction industry; to operate as a profitable business, ensuring growth and opportunity to our associates and stockholders; to provide a work environment which sets high standards for safety, plants, equipment, and maintenance; and to be supportive of our community and industry" |
